In recent years, we have been paying more and more attention to protecting the environment - choosing more plant products, replacing plastic with more sustainable materials such as cotton or any other fabric, or when storing food use glass. But what about the other things and products we wear and use every day?

There are a lot of reasons to be excited about wood so we will give you a list of factors why wood is good, and why choose a wood product to improve not only the environment but also your daily life!

Wood Is Renewable

Firstly, wood is the most environmentally friendly raw material. Wood is the only material that only needs sun, rain and carbon to grow. Responsibly sourced wood is renewable. Forests will regrow to provide a wide range of other benefits such as further carbon storage, oxygen generation and forest habitat. In Latvia, forests are covering more than 50% of the country's territory, while in the world forests cover only 31% of the land.

Wood Means Zero Waste

The second reason why wood is so good in terms of sustainability. Due to rapid technological improvements, wood production has become a waste-free industry in recent decades.

Products and leftovers can be reused and transformed at each stage of the production process. When wood is harvested, part of it is processed into lumber, part of it is converted into other wood products, and even more is recovered for energy production. And none of it disappears. These are the ways we use the wood that doesn’t make it into our furniture:

  • We use bark for landscaping materials.
  • Sawdust is used at local farms or burned as fuel for heating.
  • Rough woodcuts get re-used in pallets of other building materials.
  • We use leftovers to build our internal furniture components.

Wood Is Durable And Lasts A Long Time

Relative to its weight, wood is the strongest material on the planet. It’s extremely resilient and requires little maintenance. Wood can replace other construction materials in many structures while providing the same functionality. Unlike plastic, wood and other engineered woods can have multiple lifetimes through refinishing. For those who take the environment to heart, restoring your timber structure is a lot safer than going with steel and concrete.

When using wood as your main material, just know that it will be so much easier, with less maintenance too. When it comes to long-term health, wood is better than conventional steel and concrete.

Wood Is Good For The Climate

Wood is better for the environment in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, air and water pollution, and other. Wood products are healthy for our climate and can decrease climate change. Trees absorb carbon throughout their lives. They remove it from the atmosphere and store it in their trunks during growth. When trees are turned into wood products, they continue to store this carbon.

After the product has reached the end of its service life, we can recover the solar energy stored in wood by burning the wood for energy. Reusing wood for such energy is a great way to displace dirty, non-renewable and carbon-emitting energy sources. Compared to oil, coal and natural gas, burning wood produces clean energy and doesn't generate waste.

Fire Performance

Wood is a combustible material, but it burns slowly and predictably. This means that wood actually performs strongly in fire events when compared to other materials.

During a fire, a layer of charcoal will form on the surface of the wood, which promotes the fire resistance of the material. This layer insulates the inner core of the wood, thus slowing down the penetration of heat, keeping the moderate temperature of the unburned material low and allowing the wood to carry its load much longer than steel. The layer also reduces the overall burning rate of the timber. The natural self-defense mechanism increases the ability of wooden structures to survive a fire, maintaining their durability and stability.

Love Energy Production

The process of manufacturing wood uses substantially less fossil fuel energy per unit volume than steel, concrete, or aluminium - minimising the amount of pollutants created during the process. Unlike other materials, wood products are based on renewable sources of energy. Most of the energy is obtained from by-products of its manufacturing process, such as tree bark. In fact, in the production of basic wood products for construction, more energy is created than consumed.

Health and Wellbeing

Being surrounded by wood in your home, work or anywhere else has positive effects on our health. Exposure to wood products and interiors creates similar health benefits to those created by spending time in nature. Some of the health benefits are:

  • Improves emotional state, and self-expression;
  • Improves air quality by moderating humidity, encouraging easier breathing;
  • Makes you feel warm and comfortable;
  • Lowers blood pressure, heart rate, and stress levels;

And don't forget that wood is also a good interior design element.

Wood is fast to build with

A major advantage in using wood rather than wet pour concrete is the elimination of set and dry times, reducing the construction program and allowing other trades to begin work sooner. Wood buildings or anything else can be done year-round in almost any climate. Almost everywhere wood can be locally sourced from forests and is frequently less expensive than alternative building materials. It is readily available and tends to be delivered faster than other materials. Wood delivers on innovative design, speed, cost and resource efficiency, health & wellbeing, and offers a low-carbon, environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional building materials.

And not only is it easy and fast to work with, but wood creates a feeling of coziness! It can be a house, an interior element or an accessory - wood will make you feel warmer and definitely closer to nature.

Wood delivers more and with little or no cost to the environment. Wood products just have a lighter overall footprint.
